Maxine Heppner

Lately I am thinking that : All human communication begins in our bodies with pure movement, sound and image. Art filters these forms through our human intellect to express experiences of spirit, sensation and idea. So all of my work - my choreography, words on pages, images on walls, sounds in air - is fundamentally physical expression.

I am interested in balances between boldness and beauty, formal discipline, detail, brashness, lyricism and rawness. I am interested in direct links between live performance/ performers and audience. In my vision a fourth wall does not exist, and often no walls exist between on and off stage. Perception of life through art is always “real”, be it presented in ways that are mundane, ordinary, extraordinary, fantastical.

In my personal practice I identify energetic "force" and "patterns" of actions or visual or aural images, then develop forms that support that energy in a way that we can make it tangible. Without tangibility there is no art, only ideas and intentions. A tangible expression is received through audiences' 5 senses and intellect simultaneously, and becomes an actual part of their life experience. Some experiences fall away more quickly than others, intentionally, unintentionally. The exchange between the art and the audience is real. The creators’ job is to make art that their particular audience can engage in.

Known for bold and innovative projects, she has received numerous awards, grants and commissions in Canada, the USA and abroad in her 33-year career. Maxine came from Montreal to Toronto in the early 70’s, an exciting time that fostered the talent of many of Canada’s leading dance artists today. She was/is guest artist to many festivals, companies, conferences and schools since the late 1970's as well as producing her own projects. Since 1989 Maxine has been collaborating with prominent contemporary dance, music and visual artists in Canada, the USA, Indonesia and throughout Southeast Asia. She has led community arts projects from the most remote of central Kalimantan to inner-city urban North America.

Maxine's explorations in creation and education have run concurrently throughout her career, working with all ages, all abilities in inner cities, rural villages, professional training programs, companies, universities, community programs worldwide. She teaches creative process, choreography, performance and integrated voice-movement techniques and she is a certified Action Theatre teacher.

Always deeply involved in the environment of the creation, relationships and residencies have been ongoing over many years rather than surfing the international touring networks. She is known as an individual of extraordinary empathy and creativity and being instrumental in foundation building with fellow creators, performers, students, educators and community and international networks.
